car free, that's me.

sometimes i daydream about having a car again and the places i would go. ed says he misses listening to music and singing out loud in a car. i just miss driving. it's so weird to go for a year or so and not even drive a car. thank god it's like riding a bike....

you see, we have absolutely NO reason to have a car anymore. we got rid of our car, and a lot of other unnecessary stuff, when we moved here over 2 years ago.

but when the weather gets warmer, i start to think about driving to the hamptons for a day on the beach, quick trips to ikea sans the nightmarish free shuttle bus, or going hiking up state.

then i think about car payments and (gasp!) parking on the street, or (worse!) a monthly parking garage payment, and i'm jolted back to reality.

do you have a car in nyc? can i borrow it? seriously.

have you ever tried zipcars? It's a car sharing program; there are a few zipcars on my college campus and I have friends have a membership and use the cars all the time. I'm sure they have the program in new york!

felicia-
they DO have zipcar here, but we haven't used it yet. i've heard great things though.

i guess there is just something about the freedom of knowing you have your OWN transportation. but it comes at a cost of course. thanks for the tip. :)

I flip flop every month on whether or not I should get rid of my car. With two cars and a motorcycle (only one car is mine) I should probably ditch it and save some $$$. Especially with a Zipcar parked 1 block from my apartment. It's just hard to give it up cold turkey when you don't really have to.

Yeah you should definitely get on the zip car bangwagon! It's such a great idea, really. I got rid of my car here in Chicago but my husband has one so that's why. It was a money pit though, parking ticket after parking ticket, city wear and tear costs a fortune, etc. Zip car is your way to go, I swear!

I was going to suggest Zip car or a car share, too! John and I use a Bay Area-based service called City Car Share since most of our travel is to places where we don't need/want wheels or already have them, and it's been TERRIFIC! In fact, we're doing an IKEA trip tonight!

When we lived in London we didn't have a car for 15 years but the huge black cabs everywhere made that easy. Somehow they seemed safer - they are huge like trucks - than the yellow NY ones which go like racing cars.
But I couldn't do without a car now...Its like a second room...kind of sad

So this is one of the things I've been thinking about when I imagine moving back to NYC -- I'd desperately miss driving and singing in the car. Maybe if I live in Brooklyn I can have a car there? We'll see what happens, but if I do have one around, you're welcome to take day trips with me anytime.

brandi-

I live in England, and have been without a car for about 5 yrs now. Mostly for financial reasons and some environmental ones too. I have to admit though I sure do miss one for all the reasons you have said - just jumping in the car one sunny day and taking off to the beach. However, I simply cannot justify the escalating cost of car ownership, to for the most part drive about in my town. I am mainly relying on buses at the moment to get to work, when the warmer weather comes I will go back to walking. I also rent a car in the summer to get to places, they do some awesome weekend deals - I just have to be organised.

Thanks so much for the photo book tip, I will definitely check it out!

I don't live in New York (yet), but I live in southern Sweden and have a long train commute to work everyday, so I really don't need a car. I do feel the same way on weekend, that it would be nice to have one so that I could take a drive somewhere else but the cost just doesn't seem worth it. In June I'm moving to New York, where my boyfriend already lives without a car. He has one parked at his parents' place in L.A. and we've been debating whether or not we should drive it back to NYC this summer for the purpose of weekend trips, etc. I guess it all comes down to what the final cost would be...

We also dont own a car for the past 8 years as we live in the city and we got used to walking or riding the bike everywhere. We are lucky that if we really need to borrow it we can always borrow from friends or Balazs' father. To be honest I cant even imagine having one right now...hahha..Wish you a lovely Monday morning, sweetie
