just when i was getting mad at the city.

Friday, March 11, 2011

sometimes i feel defeated by the city with it's frigid winds, trashy streets, crazy blizzards, and don't get me started on the ever increasing price of well, everything (i'm looking at you rent and MTA).

but a group of 3 adorable old men acapella singers got on the subway yesterday and started singing "i've got sunshine, on a cloudy day....."

mid chorus the plumpest singer shouts out "sing with me new york" and starts a wave of singing and hand clapping on the 1 train. it was the most exhilarating moment with a bunch of strangers and left me, oddly, with a happy lump in my throat.

these 3 guys, clearly, had very little money, yet they completely made my day. my faith in the city is now restored. i should sport a touristy i love new york t-shirt for the day.

I love stories like these. Stuff like this has happened on the train here and it's always such a joy!

The city life gets me down occasionally too; it's the newspaper men saying Good Morning and Have a good weekend that always lift my spirits.

It's amazing when instead of kicking your ass, your city inspires that kind of humanity love. Sadly, this morning two strangers bickering on the train during my commute-oh well!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Bickered, rather. Don't you hate when you make a foolish spelling error in a comment?

i have no doubt that your grammar is impeccable. you just get so excited when you read my blog that you are at a loss for words.

I totally know what you mean! The city can be it's own vicious animal, challenging you, beating you down, lifting you up, it has it's own personality. It's definitely moments like the one you've described here that lets you step away and see how lucky you really are!

I lived in NYC for a while and had a weekly breakup with it. Some days I would be twirling in the streets and other days I would come home smelly and sticky and give up. For the most part, it's pretty great, especially when you come across the small moments.

YES! i feel exactly the same way. i hate the yucky feeling in the summer when you come home smelling like the city streets. and dirty street feet from your sandals!

but you're right. the good outweighs the bad every time.

Aw. I love this story. I remember seeing a bunch of people get angry and walk out in protest when some people started singing. I was like "What?! They sound awesome!" Some people are so grumpy. I miss NYC.
