let's talk SPF.

it's getting closer to the time of year where i spread spf 100 all over my pale brown-spotted skin. ok, maybe i have until june, but still, let's have this discussion.

does anyone tan anymore? i mean, are there people out there who actually still lay in the sun with the purpose of getting a tan?

i used to walk out the door with spf 15 moisturizer on my face and nothing else. i have to think that doesn't really cut it anymore.

you see, i had this suspicious looking mole on my chest (we'll call him lester) that the dermatologist deemed necessary to remove. a year later, lester came back to say hello in the same exact spot. luckily, the derm went all apeshit on lester and he is no longer with us.

now i'm uber-paranoid-anal-with-the-sunscreen girl, and i've tried a lot of products.

for my face, this sunscreen is super light and non-greasy. for everywhere else, this smells coconuty and goes on like regular body lotion.

i swear i don't work for kiehl's. just a big fan.

your turn. what do you swear by?

I totally will need one of those as I had the same thing about 3 months ago and I really hope it wont come back. It was a tiny little thing on my back. So strange how little it was! Till now I used La Roche Posay sunscreen but I'm thinking about something new and stronger. I will be trying yours. Thanks, sweetie. Happy Tuesday

guilty... i still like to lay out in the sun with the purpose of getting a tan... i know it's bad... and what are you talking about? you have beautiful skin!!

rebecca said...

diana- i've heard great things about la roche posay.

naomi- the low light in this pic is playing tricks on your eyes. don't be fooled by my "beautiful skin."

Thank you for the recommendation, I may just have to try that, because I always find in the summer after I have covered myself in sunscreen that I end up looking like a grease monkey, even when it is so-called 'non-greasy'. Sometimes around this time of year (here in UK) before it gets too hot in summer, I will sit out in the sun for about half hour to get some vitamin D. And oh how I love my legs tan, and self tanner just dont cut it. Indeed it is a dilemma.

rebecca said...

samantha- yes! non-greasy still equals grease monkey. the kiehls for face is somehow not greasy at all.

I'm still trying to get it together in the sunscreen dept after too many accidents of forgetting to wear any. I love a golden glow though, does anyone have any thoughts on spray tans or sunless tanners since I'm now going to check out the rec's for sunscreen.

rebecca said...

jenlynn- i know nothing about self tanners. anybody?

they seem like so much work! and honestly, i'm just to lazy to keep it up. i've embraced my whiteness.

I don't tan. Never have. It's either always been fair skin or burning for me, so I've chosen lots of sunblock and fair skin. I use Jason's All Natural Sunblock. The highest it comes is SPF 40, but I reapply regularly. It also smells delicious too.

you're funny. I have actually been tanning a lot this past month being in brazil for vacation. here, even if you do not want to get tanned you better be prepared to brown up ;)

Just went to the Derm myself. I am a mole factory too. I like to be tan but I who am I kidding. I am a freckle face whitey. I like banana boat for sunscreen and I love the self tanner "Sevin Nyne". It smells good and you can get it at Sephora.

P.s. your comment yesterday on my blog made me laugh...that is so my life.

LOL, you are funny. I wear a moisturizer with 15, and my bare escentuals also has a 15 in it...I am so WHITE, seriously so white my legs are purple...sexy I know.

Do you even wear makeup, so gorgeous you are.

I'm a total sunscreen psycho...all my friends make fun of how crazy I am about it. I am very pale with tons of freckles, so I wear spf 50 on my face everyday. I like La Roche Posay lightweight face sunscreen, although I am going to try the Kiehl's one per your rec. Thx!

rebecca said...

jennifer- that's hot. i'm turned on. but seriously, let's just call our complexion "porcelain" agreed? and no, i don't think i was wearing make-up in that pic. NOT because i don't need to, but because it was the weekend and i just didn't care. horrible, i know.

amanda- you're the 2nd person that mentioned la roche. i'm gonna have to test it out when my kiehl's runs dry.

I love neutrogena sunblock and it's what I buy for the baby too. i love how light it feels. I wear moisturizer that has spf 55 in it already but I put the other stuff on my exposed arms and legs. I don't tan anymore unless you consider sitting out in spf 50 tanning. I love the vitamin D and a little bit of color does just make me look and feel so much healthier and in a better mood but there's definitely no more roasting. and now that I have a baby I'm even crazier to make sure that she is doused in sunblock - it's obviously still winter in NY (ugh) but we have been away with her twice since she was born and I was just so happy that she was old enough where we could use it.

also, on a side note, I think I need to buy your knoll chair!!! did you guys go and see it in person? we are moving and need a new chair and this is exactly what I envision. can you let me know?? :) x

you've always had great skin! you also take great care of it, which is probably why. i could learn a thing (or 20) from you.

Mo Pie, Please said...

Wait, Lester came back?! That's frightening. I had a mole removed because it was suspicious and it grew within 3 months time so we took it out. But I thought it could be gone for good. I need to schedule an appointment ASAP!

As for sunscreen, I don't think I've found a good one but I usually wear Aveeno. I wear an SPF 20 in my tinted moisturizer every day on my face so I've got that going on. I'll have to try out Kiehls.

rebecca said...

meagan- lester was 1 crazy mofo. i think usually once a mole is removed, it IS gone for good. but sometimes a freckle will grow inside where the mole was removed and then need to be taken care of even further. at least that's what happened to me.

lib- i'll give you skin care tips. you teach me geography.

I should start using that! I got sunburned on Saturday...No bueno! haha

I'm the girl that smuggles French SPF 100+ back in her checked luggage, and smothers her hands in SPF 20 three or four times a day-I love me some sunscreen! I wear Anthelios on my face, but that Kiehl's body sunscreen sounds good enough to eat!

rebecca said...

lena- YES! i've heard good things about anthelios, and i sunscreen my hands all the time too! i swear, i thought i was crazy.

you guys have been so helpful.

I've heard only good things about Kiehl's but I've never thought about looking into their sunscreen. Now I'm definitely going to check that out. :)

i can't help laying out in the sun I just genuinely love the feel of it on my skin, it reminds me of being a kid or something. gosh. i just love it.

Signe said...

Gah, I am such a sinner when it comes to the sun...
I didn't even use to bother with it cause I don't burn easily but at least I started with SPF 15-25 a few years back. That is something - right? :)
