what do you do?

Friday, April 8, 2011

did i mention i turned 27 this week? i am not mentioning this to you so you can fill my comment box with happy birthday wishes.

i would like to talk about the mental breakdown i had while enjoying a lovely birthday dinner at ABC kitchen with ed.

do you ever try to avoid the "what do you do for a living" question when you meet someone new?

this question doesn't bother you if you actually have your life figured out.

random annoying person: so what do you do?
me: i'm an aspiring photographer. i like to write. i have a blog. um, and then i babysit.

i don't know why i let it bother me, but it does. i feel like i will actually have it all figured out when i know how to answer this question.... and 30 keeps getting closer and closer.

i understand how that feels. everyone keeps asking me what i'm going to do after graduation, and i just end up shrugging and saying "get a job?" (emphasis on the question mark)

to be honest, i have no idea what i'm going to do. i don't know what i want to do in life-- there are all these possibilities, but i can't decide! i figure just brush it off if you can. one small step at a time and we'll both figure it out one day.

I am going to wish you a very happy birthday! My brother just turned 27 this week as well. And I hate the what do you do question. Especially given that I'm 30 and haven't figured that out yet. Maybe I'll stumble across the answer this weekend.

Dude, I just past 30 on Sunday. 31 is scarier, trust me. The "what do you do question" is annoying even when you have a job that you like.
Stranger: What do you do?
Me: I'm a copywriter.
Stranger: Like copyright law?
Me: *Facepalm.

I mean, "passed." And I call myself a writer...

So... I am almost in the exact same boat as you.

I blog, I like photography, and I make money by running a small daycare in my house (I'm also 27!). I hate when I have to tell people about it because I always get sort of a condescending/uninterested type of response.

What people don't know, however, is that my job is great. I get to spend my days at home, where I'm most happy. I get paid to eat cereal and read stories. It's great. Having so much freedom during the day allows me to explore my creative side by blogging, taking photos, or playing around at my piano. I'm way more than a babysitter.

Anyway, happy belated birthday.

Happy birthday.
33 myself.
I am a person who could care less about the job I have, it pays well but I have no real passion for it. Dont mind doing it though.
I derive more pleasure from friends and family.
I prefer to talk about cooking and blogging!

Don't sweat it girl!

Also you are so very naturally gorgeous!

Happy Birthday!
And I know what you mean.. I find myself having to explain to people that I'm going to graduate school for one thing, but I'd rather do another. Crazy looks ensue.

thanks for opening up guys. looks like a lot of us are in the same boat huh? let's make a (cyber) toast to "finding ourselves" or whatever.

Okay, I am in love with your haircut. I WISH I could pull it off.

"What do you do?" is such a ridiculous question. Even those people who have it all figured out are surprised at how they got there, and I don't think there's one person out there who thinks, "Yup, I've got this whole grown up life thing DOWN." Because really, we're all still kids, even if we have apartments or husbands or jobs.

PS. Happy birthday, you wonderful woman.

Happy 27! And I don't really mind people asking but I figure they must soon be bored with the always getting the same answer! 'Yeah, I am still working at Tinde. Yepp, still graphic design!'
At least in a few months I can say something else for the forst time in 5 years :)

It's not even a fair question! What I do as a day job in no way reflects what I enjoy, it's a job. We should really just ask people what they are interested in. (Happy 27!)

I have always hated this question. In a way I think it's kind of rude but people are obsessed with it. Yet we're all programmed to answer it with what we do for a "living" rather than what we do in general. It's an open question - what do you do? I love photography, I love my family, I'm also x, y, z...

I'm well past 30 and some days professionally everything makes sense and other days I'm not so sure. I think it's ok. :)

and btw, happy belated birthday! thanks for stopping by the other day. I also think it's insane that we're wearing winter coats. WHY? It's so depressing. the weather was better this weekend but it's still not spring. boo.

ps--you babysit? can I email you offline? so random, I know.

Oh my goodness I know EXACTLY how you feel! I absolutely dread that question. It is comforting I am not the only one in this world who feels like that.
Thank you for coming by and visiting my blog :)

I think that's what's great about our generation. We keep it interesting. We dabble in this and that. Don't let it get you down!

Thanks for visiting my blog and Happy Birthday!
I turn 27 in less than 2 weeks.

I really like this post because it speaks to all of us out there. What do you do is such an old, traditional way of trying to assess people's worth. In order for this to change, we all need to try and ask something different. Like what are you into or what do you do with your spare time, and so on. I've spent half my life doing so many things that every few years, I have a new occupation. I consider it refreshing and a growing experience to be able to do so many different things in life.

Great blog!

you said it perfectly. "what do you do" is such an OUTDATED thing to ask, and even rude in a way.

Omg, you have to babysit for Chessa! Her daughter is the CUTEST!!!! Thanks for stopping by. You are SO not alone in feeling hatred toward that question. I've been back to grad school not once, but twice and won't have my masters until next June. So, I'll be 31 and finally "doing something." There's no rush. Just do what you like to do and the question will always be a good one. Also, yes, those sandals are such a summer necessity. I need some new ones.

oh no, that question! i too squirm a bit when asked. i have tried many different paths and still on a journey...as of now, i am a stay-at-home-pregnant-wife who loves to blog! and i'm ok with that :P (enjoy celebrating YOU, no matter what chapter in life! still sending you b-day wishes~~cheers)

First, happy belated. Second, yes, I hate answering, "What do you do?" I feel like I always have to go into some long explanation of what I do and people just think I'm making it up and look at me as if to say, "Grow up, find a real job." I like blogging thank you very much.
