i never wash my hair.

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

i'll give you a moment to un-follow my blog.

kate at for me, for you, recently spoke about making the switch to shampoo-free, and the struggle she is having with the greasies.

did you know that the more you wash your hair, the more oil your scalp produces to replace the natural oils that are lost? hence the reason going shampoo-free helps your scalp find it's natural (oil) balance. read more about it here.

i have been shampoo free for almost a year now. i didn't do it to save the environment, or save money on shampoo costs. for whatever reason, i just started to notice that every time i washed my hair it looked like crap. i started to shampoo every 3-4 days, and then eventually not at all.

i'm not going to lie to you, every once in a while i'll shampoo the hair around my neck because it gets filled with sunscreen, sweat, pigeon poop (kidding). but that's all. the hubs even washes his hair maybe once a week.

what's weird is that it's not like we had a discussion over dinner to stop washing our hair. for whatever reason, it just gradually happened. we are two dirty-headed people, crazy in love.

seriously though, my hair's not dirty. not even a little bit.

wow- I have long hair but I love how it looks the first two days after I wash it so I don't have that 'looks better when it's not washed' feeling.
I also take HUGE pride in chosing a scent of shampoo and therefore have a selection of AT LEAST four shampoos so that I can smell my mood- I get a kick outta my monkeys loving to play and smell my hair and I love it when my husband says something about it.

That is so interesting! My hair gets oily so fast, so I try to wash it every other day to help with that. By the way, thanks for stopping by my blog! :) You should definitely go to the next Bark in the Park, even if your husband can't go! It was soo much fun! And that nasty monster that was in our bathroom is called a house centipede....my nemesis in life. I HATE them!!

collecting shampoo scents are we? that's funny ren. i think it certainly depends on the person, but i've found what works for me. if i had long hair, i might feel differently.

I've heard about that "'poo-free" movement! :)
Do you wash your hair with just water? Ive heard some people do some sort of baking soda mixture.

Krystal said...

that is cool! i've never considered it i guess...should go read that..

megan-
yes! i'm poo-free. i rinse with water every day and run a comb through my scalp to wash away the dirt and oilies.

My hair dresser keeps telling me this and I am someone that needs to wash every other day due to how greasy it gets. I have used baby powder and dry shampoo before to help with this. Any ideas of how to get hair looking less greasy without washing?

rebecca said...

ashley-

the following links may help. though i never had to wash with dr. bronner or vinegar. your hair will get super greasy at first, and then after a while it stops producing as much oil and just sort of levels out. it takes a good month (or more?) to really get it the way you want. if you really want to commit, you could always wear you hair braided... for a whole month!

just rinsing your hair with water every day may help too.

I have heard many a debate over this! I LURVE my Shampoo, but so many people have made this switch

Really? How long did it take to be not so greasy? If I don't wash my hair, my dog sits next to be with her nose in my hair and sniffs disapprovingly.

rebecca said...

nikki-
i did it gradually. i would wash my hair once a week for the longest time, and then eventually not at all.

from what i understand, the thought is that the harsh chemicals in shampoo strips our hair of it's natural oil. to compensate, our hair just produces even more oil. which means the less you wash your hair, you may find out that your hair isn't all that oily in the first place. at least, that's what i figured out.

to answer your question nikki (sorry!), it took a couple months.

i have always wanted to stop washing my hair, but i get scared. my hair starts to look greasy after 3 days without a wash, how can i expect this to change? do you use a dry shampoo?
p.s. thanks for your comment on my blog:)

rebecca said...

jesse-
i've never tried dry shampoo. it just takes time. you gotta get past the day 3-4 greasies and wait it out.

I'm a once a week washer. My hair just doesn't need anymore than that. I've heard that you can shampoo with conditioner (a milder detergent), but I never thought of going completely shampoo free!

mandyface said...

I'm pretty lax on washing the hair as well, baby powder is my life saver!

I'm one of those super greasy folks so I wash my hair every other day. I use dry shampoo in the meantime and sometimes go every 3 days. I don't think I could ever go poo-free, mainly because I have long hair and I like it smelling good like Ren. I'm so glad that it's something doable though and that it works for you!

Julie Khuu said...

Wow, that's amazing! Can't believe you can get away with it that long...I've switched to probably every other day before I can't stand it and dry shampoo inbetween...I swear pixie cuts are best if only to skip the shampooing :D

Peace. Love. LOL!

I kind of adore you for posting this. John used to look at me like I had three greasy heads for admitting that I soap up every 4 or 5 days, but eventually he realized that my wildly thick hair just doesn't need to get washed all the time! Here's to clean girls who don't go crazy for shampoo!

Thanks for the sweet comment you left on my blog!
I really liked this post, do you find that now your hair is healthier? I'm quite interested in this subject :)

benson said...

and I'm in the opposite ballpark after reading this thinking perhaps I SHOULD wash my hair more often than my every 4-5 days because it's dry :)

I've really tried to do a day without shampooing my hair, but it gets so gross from sweat when I work out. My fat cat likes to sleep on my head at night -- and I don't know if I'm paranoid or what, but I really don't want my hair to smell like cat during the day.

Thank you for stopping by at my blog!

I have middle lenght hair, I stopped the everyday wash because my hair was getting really dry. Now I was about after 3-4 days, depends of what I have done. The last day, I comb my hair really good before shower, to make the oils go to the ends of the hair (dry!) and it helps for the washing too. I don't know if I could be without shampoo, specially at summer (sweat, sea water etc).

Rebeka said...

ahh I wish I could do that. I only wash my hair about once a week, but I feel like I put too much product in it most of the time to not wash it out...

That is really interesing and I remember reading an article about it before. Also I loved ready all the comments here. For some reason I feel the need to wash my hair. I have long hair and if I dont wash them every 2-3 days I simply dont feel comfortable. I use only solid, all natural shampoos as I dont like all the chemicals. My hairdresser says that the most simple hair products are the best.
Have a lovely day, kisses

Ps: I’m hosting a beautiful dress GIVEAWAY later today! Just in time for summer!

i don't know that my hair is any healthier, but my scalp definitely is. i used to have a dry itchy scalp, but since i cut out shampoo, it went away.

brandi-
PLEASE feel free to wash your cat hair as often as necessary. we won't hold it against you.

sini-
yes! i'm with you. combing a lot really helps.

this idea sounds interesting, but i have a lot of curly hair and i dont know if i can handle it (or if i am willing to go without shampoo)... maybe if i could get some reasonable alternatives to shampoo... send them my way please, cause ive noticed that my scalp could benefit from a rest from these products.

rebecca said...

jennifer-
i listed 2 links in my previous comments that may help. also, it seems that a lot of people benefit from shampoo without sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates. burts bees makes SLS-free products that i would recommend.

i neeeeed to do this! I wash my hair like 3 times a week i think but it gets so greasy so quickly. its soo annoying. your hair is gorgeous :) x

Fascinating! I wash my hair every morning...unless I'm scrudding around. Maybe I should see how long I can go?

When I switched to being a red hair- I tried washing my hair less to keep the color and my hair was greasy at first but then something changed. So now I shampoo every couple of days. I think your scalp maybe gets used to the shampoo everyday unless you do it less. My husband only shampoos maybe once a week and that's how he always done it and it smells clean! lol

I have very dry and brittle hair, so I have to wash it with shampoo every now and again. I try to leave it for as long as I can, but eventually it gets a bit grease, because I like to fiddle with it.

But, I once shaved all my hair clean off, and that was the most awesome time. I just rinsed it with water and off I went.

I love this post! So glad that no-'poo works so well for you. I am currently washing my hair every other day or so with baking soda+apple cider vinegar or a natural shampoo. I don't think I would go entirely 'poo-free, but since getting off normal shampoos and conditioners, my hair has been much healthier and gets oily less frequently.

rebecca said...

felicia-
so great to hear that it works for you as well. my hair and scalp are both healthier because of it, no doubt. i haven't tried the baking soda+vinegar thing yet.

Notes from Holly St. said...

and your hair looks so great! i find that if i don't shampoo my hair it gets built up with product and looks incredibly limp and lifeless...perhaps long hair is different from short??

rebecca said...

notes from holly-
i hardly use any product on my short hair so i'm sure that makes a big difference in my shampoo-free ritual.

Holly said...

this sounds like something i need. but i have to wash everyday as it is. i dont know what month i'd pick to be all oily and yuck getting used to it! my hair is also super long.

colleen said...

i only wash my hair every two days, but because it's so long i think i'd need to do something. do you just wet it in the shower, use dry shampoo, something else? i stand with you in not washing (or washing a little bit) your hair!

rebecca said...

colleen-
i just rinse my hair in the shower and comb through it. every once in while i shampoo the back on my neck cause it gets full of gook or whatever. but that's about it.

PROPS. i have a hard time with this because i am a total grease ball when i go ONE day without washing my hair. i have tried stopping with the shampoos, but i juuuust can't. i look so terrible. the grease moves all over my face, collects my makeup in one central sucky location in my chin and i can't last. i definitely am an every-day-er, but i also have babyfine hair and tons of it. and oily skin. so i was just effed from birth, i think.

I'm cracking up. While reading this post, I was Mortified. However, after reading that you rinse it with water every day, it's making a whole lot more sense!
Very interesting post. I'm going to look into it!

I hate washing my hair! I wash it 2-3 times a week.... I haven't heard of being poo-free though... interesting!

i love that you were embarrassed FOR me. my next post will be... "i never brush my teeth." i kid, i kid.

i have been making this transition for going on 2 years! ...still haven't gotten the balance thing quite right, so now I wash my hair like once every 3 days. I feel like it still gets greasy, but at the same time I love the texture so much better.

I think rinsing might be the answer, because I usually leave it dry in between washings...going to give rinsing every day a try. so glad I read this!

chelse said...

I seriously just had this convo with some friends and I've been wanting to try it but don't have the nerve. Maybe I'll ease into it this summe. I'm just worried because my hair is so blonde that any amount of dirt shows in it. yikes

rebecca said...

chelse-
i started out by washing my hair every 3 days or so, then every 4 days, and then gradually just rinsed. it takes a while to figure it out. honestly, since my hair has grown out a bit, i notice it looks more greasy. or it could just be that it's almost summer. i may have to change my routine a bit and go back to sudsing up every once in a while.

This is seriously the coolest post ever. I am going to try this.

i just googled "i never wash my hair i rinse them" because that's what i do and wanted to see how common it is. ok it's not at all, but glad i found this post. i gradually observed that my hair looks so much better un-shampooed. i dunno why, it just is straighter, thicker, fuller, not oily, stays the way i want it to stay, etc...i just rinse and comb under the shower, then comb afterwards and nothing else until the next shower (which is the next day incidentally). there aren't any dandruff, just some white stuff here and there if i look closely but very minor. i only wash it just before a haircut, out of respect for the hairdresser (because, you know). but that only happens 2-3 times a year. i also noticed this non shampoo thing only works in dry climates. if it's a wet region then i need to wash otherwise it just looks greasy, not at all the way i like it. i tried dry shampoo, it's ok but unnecessary. just my two cents. cheers

alexis-
thanks for your two cents. :)

Well you are right up to some extent that washing hairs often takes out the natural oil and damage the hairs but I think not shampooing year long is crazy.
