let's talk kefir.

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

did you know i'm a nutritionist? i don't talk about it often since i've changed career paths, but i still look for ways to incorporate my nutrition background into things that i'm currently pursuing.

i'm gonna get on my health and nutrition soap box for a bit and rant about kefir. the photo above is actually a blackberry kefir smoothie (strawberry kefir, frozen blackberries, vanilla extract, honey).

kefir is a cultured drink filled with friendly microorganisms that help balance your stomach and immune system, among other things. in other words, you get sick less and go poop every day.

many people swear by the probiotic pill you can take (found in the refrigerated section) as well.

the facts: i started drinking 1 cup of kefir/day last fall before the dreaded new york winter. i didn't get
a flu shot. i also haven't been sick since. i've had a few sniffles and sore throats here and there,
but nothing that has kept me in bed and away from work.

please know that i'm not suggesting you skip your annual flu shot. i'm merely telling you
my experience. but you guys are cool and you know how i roll.

*steps down from soap box.*

where exactly do you purchase this kefir?

rebecca said...

naurnie-
most any large grocery store will have it in the yogurt section. my mom lives in a small town in kentucky. i think she finds it in the "health food" section of the grocery. though it's more of a yogurt drink than it is a health food.

Glad to hear about this. I'll try it out. I'm a tyrant when it comes to my family having something healthy in the morning. Lately we've been starting with hot lemon water (it's good for the "constitution", my grandmother would say) and then it's either a green smoothie or fresh veggie or fruit juice. I'll look into kefir now - hadn't even heard of it before! Thanks :)

Can I just say that, kefir and flu shots aside, I love your straw?? :)

We actually drink something almost identical in Sweden, called filmjölk. I love it, we even eat müsli on top of it!

That drink looks good! :)

Cool. Love being healthy, and we've been doing breakfast smoothies all summer. Now can you help me come up with a warm breakfast idea that my boys will eat?

I've heard about kefir, and really want to try it. Looks like I need to make a trip to Whole Foods!

mary-
of course! you can hide all sorts of healthy ingredients inside home-made muffins- fruit, nuts, wheat germ, flax seeds, etc. you could also make breakfast sandwiches (english muffin or bagel, egg, cheese, turkey bacon) at the beginning of the week and store in the fridge. hope that helps.

lacy-
thanks so much for the feedback. will do.

You know what my "never get sick secret" is? Touching things in public places and not washing my hands. It's pretty disgusting but I figure it's actually doing the trick. Kefir sounds better.

I hate getting flu shots, but it's hard to justify not doing so when you live in a city where getting sneezed on at any second is a very real possibility. I'll still get the shot, but anything that gives my immune system an extra kick is worth a try!

I love kefir. I buy mine at Trader Joe's. Your post reminded me that it has been a little while since I've brought some home - looks like I need to make a stop soon!

your other option is to give birth to or have a child and build immunity like a king's armor by being exposed to every germ known to mankind that your child comes into contact with. of course, this will require at least a full year of being sicker than you've ever been in your ENTIRE life. but since then, i kid you not, not even a single SNIFFLE, not a HINT of a sniffle (where's my wood people?!) in a solid- rock solid- year. longest stretch ever. i work in a hospital however and am forced to get a flu shot every year or i have to wear a mask during flu season. i swear this has to be against the law or something.

as for your kefir (which i'd be game to try), my friend is using something similar with her children and her kids NEVER.. and i mean, NEVER get sick. and they poop like champs. now that i am typing that and reading that sentence, maybe my best option all along would have been to feed this concoction to my daughter the moment we got off that plane from China and continued from that day forward. not because she can't poop, but it would have saved us all a year of misery and snotty noses and sore throats.

Wow. I never really knew much about kefir, but I'm definitely going to try incorporating it in my diet more. Especially in smoothing form. That just look delicious! I can't wait for our next meeting so we can chat more about food. Let's plan it soon?

How come I've never heard of this? Okay, I'm convinced...I'm trying it.

I'm not a big fan of flu shots anyway.

You have just introduced me to something brand new and it's not even 6:00 in my pocket of the world.

Guess what I'm going to be doing?
Today the search for kefir begins - hopefully I'll get to taste it before the weekend ends...

Happy day!
