free advice from my dermatologist.

i'm not naive enough to think that you actually care about my beauty routine. but i do want to start a discussion because i think we can all learn from each other.
want some free advice from my highfalutin nyc dermatologist? seriously, she must be highfalutin because i can only get appts months in advance.
retinol. take a bath in retinol, wipe your butt with retinol, and incorporate retinol into your sex life.
here goes:
1. already talked about the clarisonic. check that here.
2. alba cleansing gel. turns into a foam. super gentle. squirt it on the clarisonic.
3. apple cider vinegar (with the motha) as a toner. more on that here.
4. here comes the retinol. doesn't matter if you have wrinkles yet or not, just use it. mostly before bedtime.
5. burt's bees doesn't really need explaining.
6. i'm a kiehl's whore. this moisturizer (with spf!) is thick and creamy for winter.
7. if the retinol is drying you out, moisturize with this at night. switch it up.
8. gob this under your eye balls at night until you look like a football player.
9. hands all dry and skanky? use this.

Yeah, 'm loving the Carisonic even after just a few days! It really is one of my best beauty splurges to date.
When you wash your face your use the Clarisonic, then apply ACV and then moisturizer, right? I'm curious about trying the ACV, so I just want to get the steps right :-)
I use many of these products, mainly Kiehls...but all fabulous! Thanks for sharing!
Also, when you go to bed, do you use the ACV, then the retinol and then moisturizer over that?
V-
yep! correcto. you've made me curious about perricone MD now.
V-
clarisonic, ACV, then retinol OR moisturizer (if my face is feeling dry).
though i'm pretty sure some people use retinol, let it sink in, then moisturizer over that.
I feel like you're accidentally creating a cult following around your skin regimen. We must.know.everything.
but seriously, I've never heard of this retinol stuff. The doc thinks it's amazing?
rachael-
retinol/retin-a are both vitamin A derivatives that have decades of research proving they can turn around the aging of skin.
this is coming from the doc, not me.
retinols are usually over the counter anti-aging creams.
retin-a is a stronger prescription dose, also used for the treatment of acne.
apple cider vinegar is great for a toner, i agree. i have tried other stuff and nothing compares. also i am going to try out the cleanser, never found one i love. thanks for the advice!

I just got the Clarisonic for Christmas... don't want to jinx it, but do feel like I saw improvement almost instantly. And yes, still loving the ACV. Need to look into this retinol business now...
I am a Kiehls whore, too and the Alba stuff is the best. Great minds think alike!
i love my Clarisonic. i splurged and bought one a few years ago and now i don't think i can ever go back. what a timely post - i will definitely be trying the ACV thing - have you noticed a definite improvement since you started using it this summer?
jen-
i have never heard anyone say a negative word about their clarisonic.
as for the ACV, it has made my skin more "normal." not too dry, and not too oily. but be patient.
Excited to use some of your suggestions. I, too, have the clarisonic. Love the clarisonic!
I looove my Clarisonic. I stopped using my retinol when I got the Mia, but I'm easing myself back into the retinol. Those first few weeks are rough with all the drying out, but it gets to be worth it after a while!
I am suuuuuuuch a kiehl's whore too. Never heard of clarisonic... I might have to check this out. Thanks!
SPF bitches! thanks for these product tips, living out west means my ass is scaley all winter long. i'll be ordering 1, 4, 6, and 8 immediately.
Oh I recently switched to a moisturiser with retinol, too. Haven't noticed any difference yet, but I like the science bit behind it, so I'd rather put it on my face than not.
Absolutely love your blog - thanks for leaving a comment on mine, otherwise I would never find it... x
I user Hope In Jar, love that stuff!
I love hearing what other people use. :) My skin is such a jerk that it seems like no matter what I try on it, it breaks out. The less I put on it, the happier it is. I do like the Alba cleanser (but I use the cleansing *milk* version), and I really need to try some retinol! If it can reverse skin aging, I'm all for it.
Thank you for this! I'm excited to give the Alba cleansing gel a try with my Mia. Gosh I love that thing! My experience with retinol - start off slowly. Because I have super oily sking I thought I could handle it so I used it every night for about 2 weeks and suddenly suffered the worst breakout of my life! Now I'm an every other night gal & couldn't be happier.
Yay! Love Kiehl's! Just added their exfoliator (not the papaya one) to my repertoire and I'm obsessed! Sounds weird, but try Argan Oil too--the Josie Maran one is great! Makes skin sooo soft.
great advice! I lovvvve Kiehl's..i'm also a huge fan of Avene's clearance K... it exfoliates your skin as you sleep, absolutely amazing!

I love my Clarisonic - it totally changed my skin. Apple cider vinegar is interesting....kinda scary, but interesting. I just may have to try it! Thanks for the tips!
Love this post. You are too funny! But great products recs! Now I want to try some Kiehl's.
Jayme & Mendi @ Her Late Night Cravings
Awesome! bookmarking it for next winter! I swear by Estee Lauder's Advanced night repair, it really works! I've seen the difference when I forget to put it on ;)
I am loving this so much! I am always into reading about skincare. I need to use retinol like whoa.
Thank you so much for visiting my blog! I love yours.

God, I'm such a Kiehl's whore too. It's the best best!
Great post girl!! I love ACV..huge fan of it and retinol/Retin A rocks
I used to be a kiehl's whore. I've since found some others I like better. But I do agree with the handcream. The shit is AWESOME. I finally pulled the trigger on the clarisonic and am currently covered in patchy white scales all over my face. I have no idea why. The first few days were great but I think my cleanser was too much with the clarisonic. I could talk skin care all day. I love it.
Best,
Tina
Wow great advice! I'm ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE at taking care of my skin. I have the best intentions for a regime but never stick to it. *sigh* My skin must hate me lol
I really love Kiehl's products, they are the best ones! Have you ever tried products from Rituals? What do you think of them? I've read loads of good reviews but I've never tried them!
Xx.
claudia-
i've never heard of rituals. but thanks for the intro!
Ha ha ha, love the bit about retinol. Now I'm panicking because I've just checked, and none of my daily products have retinol in them!
oh man...i should have found this sooner...if Im just starting with the retinol is it too late...I'M ALREADY 33!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it's on! retinol all day, e'eryday.
Hmm I have some nasty forehead wrinkles. Years of sign language requiring constant eyebrow raising and forehead furrowing will do that to you I guess. I gotta get on this. Thanks!
This is awesome! I'm already a Clarisonic devotee, but I'm definitely going to try out some Kiehls now!
taylor-
what a wonderful reason to have forehead wrinkles. :)
My dermatologist (the country bumpkin variety) also recommends retinol! She wouldn't let me leave her office last year without a teeny tiny bottle that cost me $90. When she said, 'Trust me. You need this.' I didn't argue. Still not sure it's worth the expensive pricetag though....
sarah kate-
yikes! though i'm sure it's not as potent, i just stick with over the counter retinol.
These are all great products! I havent tried the Clarisonic, but I have the DDF Revolve and LOVE it! www.casualglamorous.com
You are so wonderful. Thank you!
loving your recs as well. i drink an ACV tonic often but have yet to use at as toner. def trying that one!
Love the Clarisonic. Tried the ACV a while back when you mentioned it but I was being lazy and just wetting a cotton pad and then putting a little ACV on top. The smell was definitely not disappearing. I'm going to give it another try with a properly diluted solution. Will be checking out the Alba cleanser as well! Thanks!
audrey-
ouch! that had to burn! and stink! haha. yes, try diluting it to at least half with water. sephora has great pump bottles you can use or just any old travel size container.
You just used 'skanky' and 'whore' in a post about skin care. Can we be best friends?!
Thanks for the advice!

GReat tips, will try to try them when I have the chance.
Thanks for the tips! I've heard great things about retinol, like that it helps wrinkles and acne, my two biggest concerns. I'm going to give RoC a try.
Your post on the Clairsonic has me sold. I've got to buy one soon:)
As a teacher, I wash my hands a billion times a day and they are horrendous! I'm ordering the Kiehl's immediately! Thanks Becca.
Sounds like someone is getting some freebies from Kiehl
Anyone have any reservations about Retinol? I am definitely not meaning to stir the pot since I love these recommendations Becca, but am curious if anyone else is on the fence.
I generally try to use natural products on my face. (There is a great line of products here in Canada called Pure & Simple, I've been using them for about 2 yrs and have seen a marked improvement in my skin). They are based on ayurvedic principles which I was skeptical about at first but seems to really match my skin type so what do you know.
Anyway, my natural efforts might be a moot point because I used acutane as a teenager, so i might have effed things up already. But I am curious to know people's thoughts on it. The RoC Correxion cream scored a 7 on the EWG's Skin Deep website, which is pretty high.
Thanks for any input!
This stuff is down t earth, hats off buds out there.
