the truth about deodorant.

Monday, January 30, 2012

did you know that anti-perspirant deodorant contains aluminum? aluminum gets into your armpit pores and blocks your sweat glands. that's right, your pores are blocked by aluminum. gross, and not safe.

also, most drugstore deodorants contain alcohol. the alcohol in deodorant is what gives your shirts those yellow pit stains. sexy.

that being said, a lot of all-natural deodorants i have tried (tom's of maine, for example) have left me smelling like the subway in august.

so far, malin+goetz eucalyptus deodorant has actually worked. i don't smell like the subway and my pits aren't getting clogged with chemicals. score.

I love this company's shampoo. So I suppose I'll have to give this a try!

YES! So helpful--I've had the same experience with Tom's--can't wait to try this--thanks Rebecca!

same experience with Tom's and i hated going back to commercial stuff with all those nasty carcinogens. i will have to try this out.

So Ryan LOVES this stuff, but I'm painfully allergic to it (and the Tom's). My underarms swell with bumps and get hot and puffy—isn't that weird? :( I have no choice but to use the aluminum stuff.

I've been trying to move towards more natural deodorant. Same experience with Tom's.
But I've tried the Malin and Goetz one as well and so far am not sold (although I love their body lotion). My husband started using Earth Science Rosemary Mint deodorant and I find myself always reaching for his. It smells good and I think it works well. Also a little bit cheaper.

wow. so tom's definitely sucks for everybody.

laura-
i wonder what the ingredient is that you're allergic to? so weird.

katie-
thanks so much for the recommendation. cheaper is good!

I love this stuff! Their products smell amazing!

Thanks for this recommendation - I have yet to find a good deoderant without the nasty stuff, so I'll definitely give this a try!

Thank you for information. Now I know why my fiance's T-shirt has stains around arm pit areas. I will check out this product.

My skin is so sensitive, I have to use these kinds of deodorants :[ I tried Tom's too and it made me smell waaaay worse than if I just went without lol. Thanks for the rec, I want to this one!

Oh wow you read my mind with all of the comments above when discussing deodorant! I'll have to give this a try immediately.

Trying it- anything for the promise of no more yellow!

I used to use a heavy-duty Swedish deodorant that you apply only once a week. It works like a charm, but then I found out it had crazy aluminum levels! I've stopped using it and switched to regular drugstore brand, which is really just a lesser evil. Does the Malin+Goetz one stop the sweating or just disguise the smell?

Rebeka said...

Toms sucks. Definitely agree. Thanks for this suggestion - Alzheimers runs in my family so it always makes me uncomfortable using drugstore deodorant with aluminum, but also it makes me uncomfortable smelling gross, so I put it on anyway. I'll give this kind a try!

You ALWAYS find the BEST stuff. IDK how you do it.

rebecca said...

vanessa-
i'm imagining a beautifully designed swedish deodorant with a poisonous skull on the label. once a week?!

malin+goetz deodorant doesn't stop/prevent sweating because it's aluminum free. though it neutralizes the smell pretty darn well. we'll see when summer rolls around.

nobody likes clogged pits. I definitely don't. this sounds like the perfect solution. Do I have to get it online or did you find it in the city? wholefoods probably has it, right?

A friend of mine had a similar experience with Tom's. How are they still in business when everyone hates that deodorant so much? I've been using Dove, but I'm definitely open to a more natural option. The issue, for me, is effectiveness. I'm very interested in finding out if it does its job in the summer. Be warned: you might get a random/weird email from me in July asking you about your armpits.

Chessa! said...

and btw, it's so ridiculous that the products that are actually good for you (or just non-toxic) are so expensive. $18 for a deodorant is a little steep but I'd pay it so I don't poison myself with a daily product that I would only get at a drugstore.

rebecca said...

monica-
right? $20 not to be poisoned.

negative on the whole foods. they have a store in chelsea on 7th ave (b/w 20th & 21st) plus another on the UWS. some products are also at barneys and bloomingdales.

we have a family friend who was told by her doctor to stop using commercial deoderant when he diagnosed her breast cancer. ever since then i've been on a mission to find a deoderant i like and it's hard. i'm almost convinced that even when we do find a good one, it's only a matter of time before we become immune to it and we start being stinky again. right now i'm using a new formula of jason's and i'm liking it. i believe it's their one w/ tea tree oil in it. i was once told you have to get one w/ tea tree oil in it if you want to smell less offensive. lovely.

Has anyone tried Aubrey Organics E Plus High C roll-on deodorant? I've heard good things but have yet to try it myself.

rebecca said...

samara-
haven't tried that brand.

Chessa! said...

totally. I can't believe what we spend on organic milk a month between us and the baby. but it's a necessity. but back to clean pits...I have to check to see if WF sells anything other than Tom's (ugh) since I've been thinking of switching from Dove for ages.

i actually had a horrible infection under my arms (so bad i couldn't put my arms at my sides, because it hurt so much), and ever since then i've used aluminum-less deodorants. tried tom's, and had an allergic reaction to it; tried the "natural" deodorant crystal and it didn't work at all; finally found the lavanilla laboratories deodorant i wear now (and love!). it does occasionally fail (i guess i'm really smelly? who knows) so i've been looking for an alternative...maybe switching it up with this malin+goetz will work? (it's certainly cheaper than lavanilla!)

Hmmmm–a natural deodorant that works? I like the sound of that!

My aunt has always insisted on this but I have never payed attention to it (bad!). I've tried lots of deodorants and for the last 7 years I've been using Dry Idea, though is not aluminum or alcohol free :(
For a while, my stepsister used one that comes like a crystal rock, have you heard of it? She said it worked, but I have no idea where she got it from :S
Thanks for the recommendation, definitely giving this a try (if I find it!)

Ah yes I'm on this journey at the moment too. I'm wearing a nasty-free one most days and when i go out to dinner or exercise, I'm still having to resort to the nasty one in my drawer. I don't know if we get that brand here in Australia. I am going to try Miessence next, which I have heard works well. Do you get Miessence over there? I know I only said it yesterday, but I'm so glad to have found your blog and so many topics in common with my interests.

Love the recommendation...I've been using Burt's Bees, although I'm up for trying another natural one! Have you tried Vapour Organic Makeup? It's uber awesome (and I don't work for them) http://www.vapourbeauty.com/ My day-job is working as a personal trainer, so some awesome deo is necessary (otherwise, chin-ups are extra painful!)

rebecca said...

hotmess-
ha! i haven't tried vapour. i need to get on the all natural makeup train as well. thanks for the rec.

lucent imagery-
i haven't heard of miessence either. you guys are introducing me to tons of new stuff.

I've been pleased with Kiehl's deodorant. It is non-scented and works very well for me--and with regular deodorants I tend to sweat a lot. http://www.kiehls.com/Superbly-Efficient-Anti-Perspirant-and-Deodorant/525,default,pd.html?start=1&cgid=body-hygiene

I'm on this epic journey as well. I started using coconut oil because I have it around all ready as a baby product. As one who has tried many non-alumin. options, I think it works quite well.

stephanie said...

i'm so totally going to try this! i'm all about natural things and yeah aluminum in my armpits is so not sexy!

the rock/ crystal quartz is aluminum based! i just recently stopped wearing mitchum, and have yet to put on the desert essence deodorant i bought. i dont smell bad even after riding my bike and getting sweaty. i think we have to reframe our minds regarding our BO. maybe in the hot days i'll carry an armpit hanky and just wipe? i dunno, but the skin under my arms feels happy. i just shave and put a little lotion, so much nicer.

Lena said...

I'm trying this ASAP. Be gone nasty yellow stains that occasionally ruin my shirts!!

I recently found out that I am allergic to aluminum so have spent the last year trying every non-aluminum deodorant on the market! I've found Desert Essence Dry By Nature Deodorant from Whole Foods works well and is reasonably priced.

P.S. This is my first time posting to your blog. Found it recently and have really enjoyed reading your posts!

NATURAL DEODORANT THAT WORKS... CRYSTAL MINERAL SALT DEODORANTS- CONTAIN POTASSIUM ALUM
I've tried several natural deodorants including Tom's and Alba. I live in Alabama and it is very hot here so I have no room for wasting money on products that don't actually deodorize.
My solution.... CRYSTAL BODY brand, it uses potassium alum, a natural-no harm mineral salt deodorant. I found I have to use 2 coats, apply one, let dry then apply 1 more for all day protection. ITS WORTH IT LADIES... we need to stop poisoning ourselves.
And even more proof... my boyfriend has used aluminum deodorant his whole life, he thought my non-standard deodorant talk made a lot of sense, tried the crystal body for men and it works for him too!

For the past couple months I've been trying Nature's Gate Spring Fresh scent deodorant and I'm pretty happy with it. I got it at Wegman's, but I'm sure something like WholeFoods would have it. Sometimes I'll reapply throughout the day just to be sure, but it works well. Nice scent, no stains on a new white shirt (finally!!!), and I don't stink at the end of the day. Yes, I've made my husband smell my pits!
