chocolate dipped mandarin slices

tis the time of year in which we look for a healthier dessert alternative and i couldn't pass up sharing kathi's quick recipe for chocolate dipped mandarins (clementines work too). my urge for something sweet after dinner could use some tweaking, though i've made a good habit of drinking chocolate soy milk before bedtime and leaving it at that. ok, not always, but i do make an effort to keep the dessert habit in check this time of year as the cold weather deters me from walking the city as often as i'd like.

kathi's recipe calls for a touch of shortening to make the chocolate super smooth-- needless to say i left it out and though my clementines didn't turn out quite as pretty, they were insanely delicious.

what do you reach for when a sweet craving takes over? i've always loved the weekend dessert rule in which you truly make good choices throughout the week (a few slices of chocolate dipped fruit, small cup of homemade hot chocolate, etc) and then on the weekends you eat a dang slice of cake-- no guilt. completely removing a proper dessert from your diet isn't a viable way to live, just give it some boundaries instead.

Oh my, these are adorable! I think they look great, but I have a feeling a little coconut oil (if you have it) might work like the shortening, but be a better option. I must try these!

nicole-
great idea! thanks. they worked fine without any added oil, but admittedly not very attractive. :)

These are so pretty! My dessert rule is when I feel like it...which isn't very often. I may have a square or two of very dark chocolate a couple days a week but it is very rare that I want an entire slice of cake or a cookie or a cupcake, etc. It has to be something really good that I don't eat very often like gelato. I had dinner with 4 coworkers last night at the Chicago Eataly and after we polished off pasta and wine, we each had our own cup of gelato.

These look delicious! John and I usually indulge in a bit of dark chocolate, but I often find myself pulling the half-eaten bar out of his hands!

I wish I made better decisions about dessert, but I love it too much. I even eat dessert after breakfast sometimes....

I do that with oranges, and I even dip the skin (organic oranges + very well cleaned + boil in water and sugar) and it's just delicious!

I've heard that you can replace the lard with coconut oil if you want it to be pretty but you know, don't want to eat lard. I'm with you though, if I'm making something like this just to eat myself I don't care how it looks. These are really pretty though, and look super tasty as well. I love all the delicious citrus available during the winter.

Also, now I really want a big piece of chocolate cake. Chocolate cake is SO GOOD.
